Impending Archive
The client was looking for brand designs that would separate their brand from other vintage vendors in the city. Inspired by vintage filigree and art nevou, Impending Archive reminds us of the details we've lost, and the vintage we cherish.
The flourished letters became the through-line of the work. Shown here in the Stacked Text Logo
To create visual consistency while giving the client multiple elements to work with, each motif incorporates the Angel’s Trumpet flower and loose, scraggly leaves. The Angel’s Trumpet is a poisonous, night-blooming plant, introducing a darker undertone to the overall brand aesthetic. Its presence connects the delicate filigree details with subtle gothic imagery, helping shape an edgier visual identity.
Every element was hand illustrated. The typeface Gothicus Roman was selected for its bold presence and historical character, helping tie together the traditional influences that inform the overall design.
The client wanted an instagram profile photo that captured the brand, a stamp that expresses the brand. The block letter concept was drawn from the tradition of flourished initials used in early printing—ornate capitals. The style contoniued to appear over time, resurfacing during the Victorian Arts and Crafts movement and later through the flowing lines of Art Nouveau.
Much like these historic letterforms, vintage clothing moves through time, continually reinterpreted by the people who wear it—each adding their own perspective and style to something with a lasting past.
