Impending Archive is a Brooklyn based vintage brand.
Liam came to me with the inspiration of vintage filigree and art nouveau. We wanted the branding to remind us of the details we’ve lost, and the business to bring us vintage we cherish.
The block letter concept was drawn from the tradition of flourished initials used in early printing. The style resurfaced during the Victorian Arts and Crafts movement and later through the flowing lines of Art Nouveau.
Much like these historic letterforms, vintage clothing is reinterpreted by the people who style the pieces.
Each motif incorporates the Angel’s Trumpet flower, a poisonous, night-blooming plant which introduces a dark undertone to the overall aesthetic. Its presence connects the delicate filigree details with subtle gothic imagery, shaping an edgier visual identity.
Every element was hand illustrated. I selected the typeface Gothicus Roman was selected for its bold presence and historical character, tying together the traditional influences that inform the overall design.
